Venture with Impact: Trujillo, Perú 🇵🇪

Recomiendo muchísimo VWI, para quienes buscan aventura internacional, quieren tener un impacto social, conocer gente increíble, descubrir nuevas culturas y, sencillamente, hacer algo diferente. Había investigado varios programas para nómadas digitales antes de decidirme por VWI, pero al final me decanté por VWI por el emparejamiento con organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro y por la flexibilidad de poder hacer un mes como mínimo cada vez. No podría estar más contento con la decisión de elegir este programa.

En realidad decidí hacer dos meses: Medellín, Colombia en julio y Lisboa, Portugal en agosto de 2018. Ambos fueron experiencias geniales y también muy distintas: los voluntarios, las ciudades, la cultura, los idiomas, las actividades, todo era nuevo y emocionante. Participar en trabajo de consultoría pro bono en dos empresas socialmente conscientes, hacer amigos para toda la vida, aprender a nivel personal y profesional y salir de mi zona de confort: todo esto fue muy gratificante.

Estoy agradecido por esta experiencia y muy agradecido al personal y a los voluntarios de VWI por crear un viaje tan memorable que compartimos juntos. ¡Un agradecimiento especial a Lindsay y Jess por su trabajo, su apoyo y su energía positiva!

I would highly recommend VWI - for those that seek adventure internationally, want to make a social impact, meet incredible people, get introduced to new cultures, and who simply just want to do something different. I had researched several digital nomad programs before deciding on VWI, but ultimately decided on VWI because of the non-profit program pairing and the flexibility of doing one month minimum at a time. I couldn’t have been more happy with the decision to choose this program.

I actually decided to do two months - Medellin, Colombia in July and Lisbon, Portugal in August of 2018. Both were very awesome experiences and also very different - the volunteers, the cities, the culture, the languages, the activities were all new and exciting. Participating in pro-bono consulting work at two different socially conscious companies, making lifelong friends, learning personally and professionally, and pushing myself out of my comfort zone - all of this was very rewarding.

I am grateful for this experience and am so thankful for the VWI staff and volunteers for creating such a memorable journey that we shared together. Shoutout to Lindsay and Jess for their hard work, support, and positive energy!

Participé en el programa de julio de 2018 en Chiang Mai, Tailandia. Es la experiencia perfecta de un mes para quienes quieren trabajar en remoto, tomarse un tiempo libre del trabajo o simplemente viajar y sumergirse en un entorno diferente. Hoy en día muchos grupos y programas de viaje pasan a toda prisa por varios destinos sin dar tiempo suficiente para "conocer" de verdad un lugar. Me gustó mucho que VWI ofrezca alojamiento cómodo, wifi y apoyo local, así no estás solo. También disfruté mucho conociendo a otros participantes y haciendo actividades geniales como visitar templos, aprender a cocinar platos tailandeses y subir a cascadas!! Todavía mantengo el contacto con los amigos que hice en el programa y con los miembros del equipo de VWI. Sin duda recomendaría esta experiencia si buscas un tipo diferente de viaje y de experiencia cultural. ¡Sin duda volveré a participar en otro programa de VWI para mi próxima escapada!

I participated in the July 2018 Chiang Mai, Thailand program. This is the perfect one month experience for people who want to work remotely, take some time off from work or just travel and immerse themselves in a different environment. A lot of travel groups and programs these days rush through multiple locations without allowing enough time to really "know" a place. I really liked how VWI provides comfortable accommodation, wifi and local support, so you won't be alone. I also really enjoyed meeting other participants and doing some awesome activities like visiting temples, learning to cook Thai dishes and climbing up waterfalls!! I still keep in touch with friends I've made from the program as well as the VWI team members. I'd definitely recommend this experience if you're looking for a different type of travel and culture experience. I will definitely participate again in another VWI program for my next getaway!

La gente de VWI hizo todo lo que estaba en su mano para ayudarme con mis objetivos personales. Mi único error fue no decirles cuando tenía alguna preocupación. Por ejemplo: tenía una inquietud con mi voluntariado que aguanté un par de días antes de decir nada y, para mi sorpresa, el problema quedó resuelto al final de la jornada (si no hubiera estado tan nerviosa por decir algo).

Cuando llegué a Trujillo estaba nerviosa y me preguntaba en qué me había metido, pero enseguida hice amigos entre los locales (que son MUY serviciales y simpáticos), lo que me ayudó a llenar cualquier hueco en mi agenda. ¡Lo tengo todo! Buena comida, voluntariado, amigos, excursiones, tiempo de gimnasio, espacio para trabajar en mis estudios, aventura, podría seguir...

Estoy muy contenta de haber participado en esto. ¡Pienso seguir haciéndolo mientras pueda trabajar desde mi computadora!

The folks at VWI did everything in their power to help me with my personal goals. My only downfall was not letting them know when I had concerns. ie: I had a concern about my volunteering which I stuck out for a couple of days before saying anything to my surprise, the issue was cleared up by the end of the workday, (if I wasn't so nervous about saying something).

When I got to Trujillo I was nervous and wondering what I got myself into, but I quickly made friends with the locals (who are VERY helpful and friendly) which helped to fill any voids in my schedule. I have everything! Great food, volunteering, friends, day trips, gym time, space to work on my studies, adventure, I could go on...

I'm really happy to have been involved in this. I plan on doing it as long as I can work from my computer!

Me uní al segundo mes del programa piloto con VWI en Trujillo, Perú. Antes de apuntarme tenía las ganas/la necesidad de viajar durante un periodo largo, pero no quería dejar mi trabajo porque me gustaba mucho. Entonces oí hablar de Venture With Impact, un programa de voluntariado/viaje en el extranjero que fomenta el trabajo en remoto. ¡Me intrigó de inmediato y me apunté!

El proceso fue muy sencillo y Ann me hizo sentir tranquilo cuando llegué.

¡Me sentí afortunado de haber formado parte de un programa tan increíble con un grupo de gente genial! ¡Lo recomiendo muchísimo a cualquiera!

I joined the second month of the Pilot program with VWI in Trujillo, Peru. Prior to signing up i had the want/ need to go travel for an extended period of time though, I didn't want to give up my job because I really liked it. So, I heard about Venture With Impact -- an abroad volunteer/travel program that encourages working remotely. I was immediately intrigued and signed up!

The process was very simple and Ann helped me feel at ease when I arrived.

I felt lucky to have been a apart of such an amazing program with an awesome group of people! I'd highly recommend it to anyone!

VWI es una experiencia como ninguna otra. Yo estaba en una posición única como voluntaria a tiempo completo, ya que había dejado hacía poco mi trabajo en una empresa para viajar, y por eso tuve el privilegio de trabajar con varias de las organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro que colaboran con VWI en Trujillo, Perú.

Me sentí realmente inmersa en la ciudad y en la cultura peruana. Vivíamos en un apartamento en el centro de la ciudad, cerca de la plaza principal, donde había muchos eventos y siempre se reunía gente. Había un montón de actividades y algunas excursiones de fin de semana planificadas a las que podíamos apuntarnos.

No solo estaba inmersa en la cultura peruana, sino que además estaba rodeada de jóvenes profesionales muy motivados e inteligentes del programa. Aprendí mucho de la gente que me rodeaba, ¡y me divertí mucho en el proceso!

La directora del programa, Ann, fue profesional y siempre estaba ahí cuando la necesitábamos. Si alguien de nuestro grupo tenía un problema o una duda (una enfermedad, ayuda para comprar una tarjeta SIM, etc.), Ann respondía enseguida y nos ayudaba. Pudimos trabajar con Ann para encontrar proyectos con sentido y hacer contribuciones reales a las organizaciones y a los miembros de la comunidad según nuestras habilidades personales.

Recomiendo mucho este programa a cualquiera que busque aventura, una experiencia cultural inmersiva y una forma de tener un impacto en el mundo.

VWI is an experience unlike any other. I had a unique position of being a full-time volunteer, having recently left my corporate job to travel, and therefore had the privilege to work with several of the non-profit organizations collaborating with VWI in Trujillo, Peru.

I felt truly immersed in the city and Peruvian culture. We lived in an apartment in the city center, near the main Plaza where there were lots of events and always people gathered. There were tons of activities and some weekend trips planned that we had the option to join.

Not only was I immersed in Peruvian culture, but I was also surrounded by highly motivated, intelligent young professionals in the program. I learned a lot from the people around me, and had a lot of fun in the process!

The program director, Ann, was professional and always there for us when we needed her. If anyone in our group had a problem or question - illness, help buying a cellphone SIM card, etc. - Ann was immediately responsive and helpful. We were able to work with Ann to find meaningful projects and make real contributions to the organizations and community members based on our personal skill sets.

I highly recommend this program to anyone who is looking for adventure, an immersive cultural experience, and a way to make an impact in the world.

Esto era justo lo que necesitaba para escapar del frío invierno de Nueva York. De día, avanzaba con el trabajo. Por la noche, me sentaba en mi azotea a reflexionar sobre cambios de carrera o quedaba con el resto de participantes, que eran geniales, para tomar unas cervezas, cenar o simplemente pasar el rato en sus apartamentos.

Fue el equilibrio perfecto entre tiempo productivo y aventura.

Aprendí a surfear, ayudé a una ONG ecológica a renovar su marketing y su web, vi algunos de los lugares más preciosos de Perú e hice amigos para toda la vida.

This was exactly what I needed to escape the cold, NYC winter months. By day, I got some work done. At night, I either sat on my roof and contemplated career moves or met up with all the other awesome participants for beers, dinner, or just hanging out in their apartments.

This was the perfect balance of productive time + adventure.

I learned to surf, helped an eco nonprofit revamp their marketing and website, saw some of the most gorgeous spots in Peru, and made lifelong friends.

¡Una experiencia absolutamente increíble que te cambia la vida!

Pasé un mes en Trujillo, Perú, y me agradó la cuidadosa correspondencia entre mi trayectoria profesional, mis habilidades e intereses y una organización local sin ánimo de lucro, así como la disponibilidad 24/7 y el apoyo del personal del programa. Pude enseñar inglés en escuelas rurales, poner en marcha un programa extraescolar en el que los alumnos empezaron un intercambio de idioma por correspondencia con una escuela estadounidense, y participar en intercambios de idioma y cultura con adultos, donde perfeccioné mi español e hice nuevos amigos. Tuve una situación de alojamiento fenomenal con otros participantes de VWI, y sentí el cálido abrazo de algunos otros profesionales estadounidenses que trabajan en remoto, a la vez que me sacaron de mi zona de confort y conocí a mucha otra gente de Perú y de otros lugares. Durante los meses previos a mi llegada me sentí súper preparada con información sobre todo, desde las normas culturales hasta los planes de telefonía internacional o la logística de reservar mis vuelos.

Lo recomiendo mucho a cualquiera interesado en viajar, en salir de su zona de confort, en desarrollar su dominio de un idioma, en conocer gente increíble tanto de Estados Unidos como de todo el mundo, en no practicar el «voluntourism» sino construir relaciones y sumergirse en una comunidad, y en marcar la diferencia sin tener que dejar su trabajo a tiempo completo.

Absolutely amazing and life-altering experience!

I spent a month in Trujillo, Peru and was pleased with the thoughtful match of my professional background, skills, and interests with a local nonprofit organization, as well as with the 24/7 availability and support of program staff. I got to teach English in rural schools, start an after-school program in which students began a pen-pal language exchange program with an American school, and participate in adult language and culture exchanges where I honed my Spanish and made new friends. I had a phenomenal living situation with other VWI participants, and felt the loving embrace of a few other remote-work American professionals while also being pushed out of my comfort zone and meeting lots of other folks from Peru and elsewhere. For months before I arrived, I felt super-prepared with info about everything from cultural norms to international phone plans to the logistics of booking my flights.

Highly recommend this for anyone who's interested in travel, busting out of their comfort zone, developing their language proficiency, meeting incredible new people both from the States and around the world, not participating in 'voluntourism' but rather building relationships and immersing themselves in a community, and making a difference while not having to quit their full-time jobs.

VWI fue una experiencia increíble. Pude trabajar con organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro inspiradoras y sumergirme en sus proyectos en curso, y sentí que tuve muchas oportunidades de conectar con la gente local.
También me encantó el grupo de VWI: fue maravilloso conocer a personas motivadas e interesantes de muy diversos orígenes que compartían una pasión común por servir a los demás. Sentí que obtuve algo valioso de cada persona que conocí en el programa.
El coordinador también hizo un gran trabajo organizando actividades y excursiones divertidas: ¡siempre había algo en marcha, desde happy hours hasta caminatas a gran altitud!

VWI was an amazing experience. I was able to work with inspiring non-profit organizations and immerse myself in their ongoing projects, and felt like I had many opportunities to connect with locals.
I also loved the VWI group - it was wonderful meeting motivated, interesting people from lots of different backgrounds who shared a common passion for serving others. I felt like I gained something valuable from each person I met in the program.
The coordinator also did a great job of setting up fun activities and excursions - there was always something going on, from happy hours to high-altitude hikes!
